Newport

Newport is a unitary authority area in south east Wales. It's located 138 miles west of London and 12 miles east of Cardiff. Newport has the largest urban area with a population of 306,844 and a city population of 145,70 in the 2011 census. The city is one of the sunnier in Wales, and its sheltered location tends to protect it from extreme weather. Newport has eight state comprehensive schools and one independent school. Newport became a unitary authority in 1996. The City of Newport is divided within the UK Parliamentary constituencies of Newport East and Newport West and elects one Member of Parliament in each constituency. The two constituencies cover a similar area to that of the city area controlled by Newport City Council. Newport is divided into Newport West and Newport East constituencies in the National Assembly of Wales and elects one Assembly Minister (AM) in each constituency.
